happy halloween!

it's 11:53 am and i just had my first trick-or-treaters. i knew they were going to start coming early; a bunch of friends refused to believe that they come before it gets dark. why waste all of that candy-getting time? if halloween landed on a weekend back in the days where i could still get away with trick or treating, i would be out by noon as well

last night denise and i went to my friend danielle's halloween party as elmo (me) and katy perry (if you don't get it google the "scandal").
we made some spooky treats including witches fingers (success) and spider brownies (epic fail):

now that the worst of school is over for a few weeks (can't speak for denise), hopefully we can start making some holiday boxes. it's kind of frustrating to keep making though when no one is buying, however. but i guess we'll keep trying..

i want this dog SO bad. so bad that i actually just used capitols in my blog.

his name is panda, and he is currently located at the town of hempstead animal shelter. not to be confused with the town of north hempstead animal shelter, where i work. denise and i met him at the lido beach festival by the sea last week and i've been thinking about him every single day since then. the town of hempstead shelter is packed with animals and unfortunately their days are numbered there. i wish they would adopt a volunteer program like we have to help with getting dogs adopted- dogs have a much brighter future at our shelter.
 check out our volunteers' website

unfortunately i know what i could handle and my family definitely does not have time for another dog right now. the most i can do is hope this guy finds a home :(

my mother bought a box from us today. is it sad that she is probably my best customer? i guess not as long as they are getting sold; the box was a new one that had yet to get put up on etsy due to my laziness/ lack of motivation due to lack of sales. i know these things take time, however it has been a few months and we have only had 2 sales to people that we don't know. we actually have sold quite a few to friends and family, however.  i'll stop being a downer. i guess i'm in that kind of mood today.

on top of that, i basically told a guy that i'm into him via email by saying that if he was a lifesaver he would be cherry because that's my favorite flavor. who do i think i am, really?

time for biggest loser, denise just got here. yay!

etsy favorites

the days have been flying by; i know i said i would update last sunday but that unfortunately that never occurred.
some current etsy favorites:

we ended up not appearing at theMarte since I didn't put 2 and 2 together and realize that i work on saturdays and the market was on a saturday. it's not a sound decision to take off for a craft fair where we could potentially make no money, so i decided that we are going to have to wait until the spring when they have sunday dates and i have time to spare.

oh crap my laptop is going to die and i'm at starbucks attempting to do homework.

for the love of a horse...

new box inspired by our love of horses:
i've loved and worked with/ridden horses for as long as i can remember and as soon as we saw this paper in the craft store, it had to be purchased. then my mom gave us this awesome steampunk mish-mosh that she had purchased from an etsy user to use in jewelry making but never did. i think it goes perfectly with the motif of the box.

my horse jovi:
winter 2009
aren't we cute?
and yes, he is named after jon bon jovi. just wanted to clear that up.

i know i mentioned the clearance sale already, but i think i might mention it again. we are offering a 25% discount on some of our older items that have not sold yet. if you mention "blog" in the notes to seller, we'll give you an extra 5% off. we really need to get rid of some of these. we are running out of space to store them!

and just since i was just talking about our love for animals, i might as well post a photo of our favorite dog who gave us the inspiration for our name:
dexter

1st day of school

i sincerely apologize for the lack of posts for the 3 readers of this blog thus far. it has been a crazy week for both of us; school starts again this week. so nervous.

last week we started our fall 2010 pieces and 2 of them are completely finished- two more are in the works. we also finished a few more that were works in progress for quite a while. expect about 6 more boxes to finally be put in the etsy shop this week.

sorry about the short post, but i need to try and sleep. mathematical modeling in population biology tomorrow at 9:30 am. eek.

sincerely,
genna

theMarte

we finally made it to the craft store yesterday with some  coupons, and we are now ready to start work on some fall themed pieces.  we bought this book with a ton of gorgeous fall themed paper designs, 10x better than what they were selling loose. we finished 2 more last night that will be appearing on etsy in the coming hours...

this guy got adopted from the shelter yesterday:
isn't he cute? he's been at the shelter a while now so it's great he found a home
some more mushes waiting for homes at the town of north hempstead animal shelter:
sally the foxhound

truffle the pit bull

we are about 95% sure that we are going to be appearing at theMarte craft flea market on september 25th in the upper west side in new york city. if you haven't heard of theMarte yet, you should. it's an upscale flea market where a large portion of vendor proceeds go to projects in the nyc public school districts. more details to come.

some new ones

we were going to travel to the craft store to purchase some necessary supplies to do some crafting tonight, however our plans were foiled when my dad's dinosaur of a computer (the only one in the house connected to a printer) refused to load the coupon page- and let's face it, we were not about to walk into a craft store not armed with plenty of 50% off coupons. instead we ended up visiting with grandma and eating pie.

here are 2 of our latest finished ones:
luck of the irish

filigree copper

we are watching project runway and are appalled at the judge's reaction on michael's design to compliment the philip tracey hat. it's awesome i don't care what they say.

anyway, we are having a clearance sale on select items. some of our older items that have not sold yet are now 25% off; originally $18 is now %13.50 and originally $15 is now $11.25. you should check it out.

the first post

because it's 12:30 am and I have to be up in less than 7 hours, i will keep this short. we are dexterous design, cleverly named after our favorite little dog, dexter, whom i'm sure you will come to know. one of us in an aspiring ecologist, the other a graphic designer, and as far as we both could remember (and that's far, since we have been friends for almost 15 years) we have always used and enjoyed various forms of art as an outlet for creativity and relaxation. originally we began making the trinket boxes as personalized unique gifts for friends and family. eventually we ran out of people to make them for, so we decided to continue creating them and ended up with a surplus and no idea what to do with them; as we were both long term members of the buyer community on etsy, we decided to open up our own little shop in april 2010. we plan to use this as a space to blog about our own shop, our favorite etsy findings, and potentially update on day to day life.

goodnight,
genna
